Straight razor vs. safety razor, honestly

One is better. It’s probably not the one you own. A straight answer about both.

A straight razor gives a closer shave. That is not really in dispute. What is in dispute is whether closer is what you actually want on a Tuesday morning at 7am.

The straight razor wins on result and loses on tolerance. It cuts below the skin line, which is why the finish lasts into the evening and also why an ingrown hair becomes a real event rather than an annoyance.

The safety razor wins on repeatability. It is harder to hurt yourself, easier to do half-awake, and forgiving of a bad angle.

Our recommendation is unglamorous: safety razor at home, straight razor in the chair. Let someone whose hands are steady and whose blade is fresh do the version that draws blood if it goes wrong.
